Final Fantasy 6 AI remake video surprises series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi

A viral AI-generated video showing what appears to be a modern 3D remake of Final Fantasy 6 has caught the attention of series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. The clip, which circulated on X, initially looked like an ambitious remake project, with updated environments, character models and a visual style close to modern Final Fantasy titles.

Sakaguchi shared the video on his personal account and appeared surprised by what he saw. However, veteran Japanese developer Akitoshi Kawazu, who worked on early Final Fantasy games and later created the SaGa series, quickly clarified that the footage was generated by AI rather than taken from a real project.

The moment has reignited discussion around both generative AI and the long-running demand for a true Final Fantasy 6 remake. Many fans still regard the 1994 JRPG as one of the strongest entries in the series thanks to its mature story, industrial fantasy setting, memorable cast and iconic villain Kefka.

Unlike Final Fantasy 7, which received a full modern remake, Final Fantasy 6 has largely remained tied to its 16-bit roots, even through later remasters. For many players, the AI video served less as a real teaser and more as a reminder of how much potential a proper remake could have.

Square Enix has not announced any official Final Fantasy 6 remake. For now, the viral clip stands as another example of how convincing AI-generated gaming content has become, and why viewers increasingly need to question what they see online.
